Banana Tree Farm

15 Capital Road

Maronga

Malawi

2nd June, 1999

Dear Terry,

I got your name and address from a pen-friend magazine, and I´d like to be your pen-friend. Can I?.

First I´d like to tell you some things about the place where I live. Karonga´s really just a big village. I know everybody here. I live on a farm with my parents, three brothers, two sisters and two cousins. The cousins are my aunt’s children. She’s ill so my mother looks after them for her.

Most men in Karonga, including my father, have more than one job. You see, the farm’s small and we don’t have much money for it. So she works as a shoemaker and a mechanic as well.

On the farm we groe bananas and we sell them in the local market. When we have to pay for big things like school fees and school uniforms, we sometimes kill one of our pigs.

I go to a catholic school in Karonga. I’m quite a good student. Among the eighty students in my class, I’m third. We learn English, of course. English is very useful because there are so many different languages in Malawi. We need one language which everybody speak and understand.

I love living in a big family, but I’m only going to have two children. I don’t want to stay at home all day or work on the farm. I think I’m clever enough to be a doctor. However, that’s very difficult for a girl. Actually, I’ll probably have to choose between being a nurse and working on a farm somewhere.

I just finish now. Please write back and tell me about yourself. Do you big in a big city or in a village like me? How many people are there in your family? What hobbies do you like?

And most important of all, as “Terry” can be Teresa or Terese, are you a boy or a girl?.

Love,

Dowa
